Happy Lunar New Year!!
You may know already, red is the color~~

Tomorrow is our New Year's eve.
But there's an earthquake happened this morning in South of Taiwan.
It's hard to imagine the tragedy just happened before our biggest holiday......
Hope you're safe and happy.
Pray for Tainan.

Done by pastel?
Love the use of color red in this to bring out the complexion of the face.

I like how you create her facial expression (that looks very natural and realistic) with only few strokes and shades. The contrast between that calm expression and the vivid red colour is beautiful.
In western cultures red means love, rage, expressive feelings in general - is it the same in Taiwan?

I hope in spite of the tragedy the new year will become a good one.

haha, in Chinese culture, red means lucky, auspicious, festivity.
That's why not only in New year, but ancient China also use it as the color of wedding.
(In Taiwan, most of us are immigrants from China 300 years ago, with some a
boriginal.
We were ruled by Japan since 1895 until
world warⅡ.)

Thank you your words!!!

You're welcome.

Thank you for the explanation. It's interesting how different cultures have completely different meanings for the same colours. In germany - like in other western countries - the colour for wedding is white, cause it's clean and pure (the couple should be clean and pure as well).

What was the reason for the immigration of the Chinese 300 years ago?

Thank you for asking!
Well, actually the first people came to Taiwan are from Holland and Spain.
(Because of the Age of Discovery )
In that moment, there're some aboriginals on the island.
But not too long, Dutch and Spanish were defeated by a pirate's son, Koxinga(Zheng Chenggong), who's half Chinese, half Japanese.
He's belong to "Ming" dynasty. China was changed from Ming into Qing.
So Koxinga and his son also defeated by Qing. And Taiwan became part of China.(in 1683)

No matter Dutch or Spanish or
Koxinga, they need people to explore and develop the new land.
China is just nearby. The land of China which is the most near Taiwan is barren, full of hills, not easy to grow foods.
So many Chinese who lived that area came to Taiwan to find opportunity.
Not mention after Taiwan became China's.
We have family tree. And my Dad told me that I am the 10th generation since my ancestor came to Taiwan.
No matter why he came here, I think he's cool. XD

Hope this can explain!

That's really impressive, didn't expect such a detailed answer. :)

It was very exciting to learn this. Didn't know for example, that Dutch and Spanish were the first foreign conquerors of Taiwan (and not the Chinese).

So your family has been living there approximately since the end of the 17th / the beginning 18th century. I just can retrace 3 generations. Because of World War I, there's no information about older generations of our family.

Do you think Taiwan is a Chinese island or a real country (but under Chinese government) nowadays?

Well... I think it really shows how arrogant and conservative China was that time. Right? They thought they're the best of the world, so they forbidden their people to trade with other countries. In that time, people who traded on the sea were all pirates, because they're doing the illegal thing. That's why of course they didn't see Taiwan as anything important, just a small island. But still there're some people who knew about Taiwan, and thought it's better did something, otherwise you offered a place for pirates and criminals.
With their narrow mind, they lost almost all the wars in 19th century.
And they gave up Taiwan very quickly to Japan... Japan who wanted Taiwan because they wanted to attack China.

And to your question, I can only think two kind of people who from Taiwan will answer you Taiwan is part of China now.
1. He is a famous star who doesn't want to lose his Chinese fans.
2. He is mentally ill, really needs a doctor.
It's not I curse somebody, but he really has some issues with the reality.
We just voted for our new president. Usually the one China hates will win the election, including this time.
And our government doesn't need to ask China to decide what they want to do.
We have our own army.
Chinese people they need visa to come to Taiwan, and much strict than normal foreigners.
We don't have any Chinese stores on the street.
(Maybe some really rich Chinese has bought our big company. XD But they hired Taiwanese.)
I don't pay tax to Chinese government, I don't have Chinese passport, but they gave us a special certificate which if you need to go to China even change your flight. They imagine we're like Hong Kong. But we're not.
We are never the same country. If you want to come to Taiwan, you have to apply the Taiwanese visa, not Chinese one.

More than fifty years ago, KMT lost China after WW2. In 1939, there're a million Chinese came to this island, which just sent back from Japan two years ago. And that time we had 8 million population. (Now it's 23 million.) So a million people are many.
Meanwhile, in China, a new country is just born, so called "people's republic of China."
KMT survived in Taiwan (They said our name is "Republic of China"), I don't think they're Chinese anymore. Most of them are Taiwanese now, of course. It's been more than 50 years! And Taiwanese fight for so long for our democracy. Our roads separated.
Well, I guess you understand! Because German were two countries not so long ago, right?

I don't know if we'll reunion in the future. But it's no doubt we're different now.
I have a very good Chinese friend, we didn't talk about political issue, but I think she's rational.
Chinese for me is like half-foreigner. I don't understand China that much, Chinese people also don't know about Taiwan, either.
I know they want us back, but I don't like they use bomb toward us.

It's nice to chat to you! I think you're different. I've been to Europe for a while. I didn't feel people have such interest and open mind in the history far away from them. So, very nice to meet you. Feel free to discuss with me if you have more questions.

Sorry for letting you wait for so long.

I never understood, why China isolated itself from the rest of the world for such a long time. In your opinion it's because they wanted to protect their culture, economy or whatever from foreign influeces, am I right? That seems to be a typical fault of powerfull states: to think that they're better than any other in the world. The European nations were the same (and still are). For them the World is a store full of natural resurces, cheap workers and willing consumers.

To your Answers:
1. Stars in the east are the same like stars in the west, what a pity.
2. Haha, I understand. With Germany it's a bit strange. We talk of Taiwan as a country of it's own, but officially it's not autonomous. The reason is, we love the democracy and freedom, but what we love most is money. That's why it's better to follow China.

Do you think it's good that the DPP won the election?

I know, what you mean. It's been two (almost three) generations since Taiwan and China have been seperated. They are just connected by history. Right, that was similar in Germany. We had a different way of life, of thinking, of behaving... But unlike China and Taiwand we were seperated by other governments. That's why we felt as one nation and wanted to reunion. Nevertheless there are still some kinds of conflict between western and eastern Germans. Those in the west say that those in the east are stupid and those in the east say that those in the west are arrogant. I hope this will end some day.

Thank you very much. Hug I also like to chat to you, because you take the time to explain your point of view differentiated. And it's interesting to get to know the point of view of someone from the other side of the world.

In general many people aren't interested in history or politics, but there are those who are open minded. The poblem is, that in European schools, newspapers, documentaries and so on people are educated/informed mostly about issues concerning Europe or the USA. Afrika or Asia are just mentioned when it comes to islamist terrorism or China's economy. What made you think, that especially European people aren't interested very much in countries that are far away?

Have a nice sunday.
